A traumatic injury, in the context of insurance, refers to physical damage a person sustains due to a traumatic event. As part of the Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI), the Traumatic Injury Protection Program (TSGLI) offers coverage for such injuries incurred while on or off duty.

Generally, the latter refers to an external force or violence; the effect of radiological, chemical, or biological weapons; or accidental ingestion of a harmful substance
Under SGLI, servicemembers enjoy short-term financial assistance through TSGLI to help in their recovery from traumatic injuries. The benefits also apply retroactivity to those who incurred losses due to traumatic injuries between October 7, 2001 and November 30, 2005.
