Small businesses in the US statistics offer a picture of a thriving economic environment, with 6,081,544, or 99% of all businesses considered small, with fewer than 500 employees. States with higher populations have higher levels of small business employment and payroll.

However, of those 99%, small businesses only account for 46% of employment. Moreover, annual payroll for small businesses is only ⅓ higher than the 504 large corporations with over 20,000 employees.

Small Business Survival Statistics

New businesses can struggle to survive, particularly small businesses. Only half of new companies make it to 5 years with only a quarter of new companies surviving 15 years.

Across all of these nearly 20 different categories, small businesses vary from one state to the next with example, the majority of small businesses having to do with things like mining can agriculture in Midwestern states but information, technology, and manufacturing in eastern states.

Small Business Owner Statistics By Demographics

US Census Data has found that certain demographics are more likely to own small businesses. Nearly half of businesses are started at home with entrepreneurs. Moreover, ownership of businesses is almost equally divided between men and women with men owning 51% of small businesses.

The data notes that older individuals, 40 or older, are more likely to own small businesses with the smallest percentage owned by individuals under the age of 30. Older adults have better resources, credit scores, and financing options with the time and money necessary to invest in new businesses.

Education is an important foundation for small business owner statistics by demographic but a bachelor’s degree is the most common highest level of achievement for small business owners.
