Insuranceopedia Explains Secondary Care
Primary care physicians are considered the first line of defense for non-emergency health issues. If they are unable to treat the patient, they will refer them to a specialist, who is classified as a secondary care provider.
Treatment from secondary care providers is generally covered by health insurance, provided that the referral comes from the patient’s primary care physician.
